Curly tail lizard is a common name of Leiocephalus. It is an iguanian lizard. It is native and restricted to the West Indies only. They have a curled tails that’s why they are named Curly tailed lizards. They have around 18 cm (7 inches) of body length. Physically they are brown to grey in color and have dull brown to black spots on the body. Curly tailed lizards are native to the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba. In the north, they were first introduced to Florida.

The average lifespan of a curly tail lizard is 8 plus years. These are very fast-moving lizards and they can easily climb up high. Both the genders, male and female reproduction is seasonal, start laying eggs late in the dry season in late April and ending it around the wet season in September, eggs hatch in the wet season from late June to December. 

If we talk about curly tailed lizard’s habitat, they are xerophilic which means arid loving, and they can be found in various habitats in the Bahamas, ranging from rocky and coastal areas to shrubs and pinelands and some populated areas. However, they mostly inhabit the coastal areas. They are ground dwellers and love living behind rock piles. 

Insects and other Small Vertebrates

Curly tail lizards mainly eat insects and smaller vertebrates, like ants, moths, cockroaches, mosquitoes, ticks, spider mites, crickets, locusts, etc. Also, Curly tail lizards can eat small fish like cubs, shiners, and minnows. Curly tail lizards also eat some lizards like anole lizards.

Plants, Vegetables, and Fruits

Due to their omnivore nature, they forage on plants and Vegetables as well. Curly tail lizards like to eat green vegetables like lettuce, mustard greens, etc., and some flowers, and fruits especially fully ripened fruits.
