Find Out What Flounders Eat

The flounder is a flatfish species found in the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans’ coastal regions. They are carnivorous and ambush predators. They hide on the sea floor’s sand, waiting for possible prey, which is ambushed after being detected. Flounder buries itself in the sand with its fins. Typically, the eyes are the only visible portion of the body.

Flounders eat a range of bottom-dwelling marine animals such as tiny fish, shrimp, and crabs. They are nocturnal carnivores in nature which means they eat during nighttime. The three days before a new moon and the three days after a first-quarter moon are the busiest feeding periods for flounders. In this article, we will explain what flounders eat and what they do not eat.

Seafood

Flounders consume a wide range of bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Flounders eat crabs, brittlestars, shrimp, worms, whitebait, mussels, and small fishes that they detect using touch and vision.

Soon after hatching, flounder larvae eat mostly plankton. When young, flounders eat polychaetes (annelid worms), tiny crustaceans, and small fishes. The young fish live in extremely shallow coastal regions and eat on tiny shrimp-like copepods, small crabs, sea worms, and crustaceans.

As they increase in size, flounders don’t eat larger fish like most predatory fish but eat more small fish. Their primary food shifts towards shrimp and small fish. Flounders also eat crabs and those fishes that dwell on the seafloor.

What Flounders Do Not Eat

Flounders don’t eat seahorses, octopuses, stingrays, or big fishes like eel, sharks, dolphins. Also, flounders don’t eat plants or another herbivore diet since they are pure carnivores in nature. Flounders don’t eat meat or humans and aren’t a thread to them at all. Although they may damage humans they surely are not strong enough to kill. Dolphins and sharks are known to feed on flounders.
