Where do arctic wolves sleep?

May 2023 · 2 minute read

Arctic Wolves sleep in a den of snow, in the coldest regions of the world. They make their dens in areas where the snow is deep and continuous, with no underlying permafrost or ice. They do NOT dig above the frost line at all, since that could cause the den to collapse.

Arctic wolves actually spend a lot of time in forested areas. During winter they do hole up in snowy dens, but they may be more often found in forests where they’ve dug out dens among boulders or beaver lodges. When temperatures are above freezing point they sleep wherever they want in the open or in snow caves or dens. At this time of year, family groups may gather at traditional sites known as rendezvous sites to socialize with each other and celebrate courtship and mating events.
