Keep in mind that the precise steps for taking the battery out will vary depending on the Honeywell Systems that you have. On the other hand, the process is pretty much the same across all Honeywell Alarm Panels. Also, keep in mind that different panels will require different types of backup batteries. Ensure that the battery that you use is the right one for your system. If you use the wrong battery, it could result in permanent damage to the system.

It is also a good idea to remove the AC Power before to go ahead and remove the old battery. You can do this by unplugging the transformer for your panel, or you could turn the breaker off for that outlet that is used to power your panel.

These steps will help you replace the battery in your Honeywell Security System:

1. Open the system

Each battery in a Honeywell System can be found on the inside. For Honeywell VISTA Panels, you will have to open up the metal cabinet that the system is in. You might need a key to unlock the cabinet.

For systems that are wireless, such as LYNX Touch Panels or the Lyric Controller, there are usually screws or tabs holding on the back cover. These tabs can be pressed in, and any of the screws can be easily removed by using a screwdriver. Once removed, you’ll be able to see the battery.

Removing the cover will result in a tamper response from the panel, so ensure that you put your system on test with the monitoring station first if the system is still being monitored. When the tamper is triggered, you will have to press any key on the panel to stop the trouble sound.

2. Take out the old battery

Find the system’s backup battery, and remove it from your system. For VISTA Panels, the backup battery is made up of a large black box that is inside of the system. Disconnect the red and black wires that are connected to the terminals for the battery. Also, you might need to get this step done.

For wireless panels, there should be a protective cover that is holding the battery in its place. You will most likely need a screwdriver to remove the cover so that you can get the battery out. Once the cover is removed, the backup battery’s modular plug can easily be removed and unplugged.

3. Apply the new battery

Take the new battery that you have and add it in the same location as the previous battery. For VISTA Panels, it is best if you reapply AC Power first. Once you have restored the AC, simply connect the panel’s battery wires to the two connection tabs on the battery. Ensure that the red wire is connected only to the positive (+) terminal. Also, the black wire should be connected to the negative (-) terminal.

For panels that are wireless, insert the new battery in the exact modular connector that was used with old battery. Then put back on the protective cover to ensure that the battery is held in place. To do this, you’ll need a screwdriver. Lastly, reapply AC Power.

4. Close up the system

If you are using a VISTA Panel, close the metal enclosure. Also, if using a wireless system, reapply the back cover as well as any securing screws. To clear out the low battery message, you will need to perform a walk test of your alarm panel. If the low battery message is still there, then it is likely that you will need to charge the battery for a few hours before the message goes away.
