Where do sandpipers sleep? - Kylon Powell

Sandpipers sleep in the sand, next to the water. They make a little depression in the sand and lie down with their beak toward the sky, covered by a wing. Sandpipers sleep on a flat stretch of sand near the water’s edge or even right on top of wet sand. Like many shorebirds, they often rest in these positions with their heads drawn under their wing.
Sandpipers often sleep on a sand bar close to water or may even sleep right on the wet sand near the edge of a body of water. In these positions, their head is drawn beneath their wing for protection from predators.

In studies conducted in Europe and North America, scientists have found that sleeping sandpipers tend to keep their beaks up and open for breathing — a position that would make sense for birds resting on top of wet sand where the air is clean and dry and they can easily breathe (without inhaling too much water).

Although we aren’t entirely sure how sandpipers sleep, we know more about this topic than we used to. In studies conducted in Europe and North America, scientists have found that sleeping sandpipers tend to keep their beaks up and open for breathing — a position that would make sense for birds resting on top of wet sand where the air is clean and dry and they can easily breathe (without inhaling too much water).

By keeping their beaks open, the birds can breathe without inhaling water in case they happen to fall asleep in a wet location. This research has given us insights into how these birds sleep and what kind of conditions they prefer for slumber.

We can conclude that sandpipers sleep next to the water in order to be close to their food source and because it is a safe place for them to rest. They make a little depression in the sand and lie down with their beak toward the sky, covered by a wing. This allows them to breathe easily and stay safe from predators while they sleep.
