Peppermint is an effective deterrent to biting insects, and fleas/ticks especially. Myrtle, Basil, and woody notes such as Cedar or Fir are also repellents for biting insects. Strangely, however, insects hate the smells of these notes. Vanilla, in particular, is a major insect repellent because it hinders their ability to find food sources. It’s good for us humans, as we love the sweet scent!

Vanilla extract can repel insects for up to half an hour. Apply more to your skin if you’re outside for longer periods of time, particularly on exposed areas like the neck or pulse points. You may also want to reapply if your skin is exposed to high temperatures, which can cause it to evaporate quickly.
