Cruising in the deep and dark seas, sperm whales are the massive species of dolphins. These are easy to spot from other whales because of their square-shaped massive heads. Native to tropical sea bodies, sperm whales occupy vast areas while swimming and diving. This is because their heavyweight is measured in tons. In fact, a male sperm whale is known to grow as massive as 40 metric tons! Because of their large and conned teeth, sperm whales are built to gulp tons of food in a day. This generous amount of diet is relative to their overall size. So this leaves you wondering “What do sperm whales eat?” Various species of cephalopods make up a major part of their diet. In this post, we’ll dive deep to learn about their specific diet including various types of aquatic creatures!

Diving deep into the sea, predator sperm whales would locate the prey by going on a hunt. As they dive deep while holding their breath, sperm whales encounter an ample supply of food sources. These deep dives help them capture their desired prey – especially, the cephalopods. In fact, they can consume as much as 2,000 lbs. of cephalopods in a day by diving deep. That being said, sperm whales eat sharks, squid, giant squid, colossal squid, hammerhead sharks, and great white sharks.
Some studies recorded the presence of large sharks in the gut of sperm whales. Hence, their diet is inclusive of not only large squids but also large sharks. Sperm whales would also feast on a multitude of other bony fishes if the opportunity arises. Sperm whales eat seals, cuttlefish, crabs, clams, fish, and Humboldt squid. Together with these aquatic diets, sperm whales eat jellyfish, octopus, krill, sea lions, and tuna.
Do sperm whales eat humans?

Their primary diet, however, is still strictly eating enormous squids and their kinds!
