Now you may be wondering “What do sea lions eat?” They eat almost anything as long as it’s edible and related to their surroundings. Given their voracious dietary habits, sea lions prefer a variety of foods, in particular the aquatic creatures.

Insects, fish, and Animals

Sea lions live in proximity to the water and are good divers where they catch prey. Fishes and other aquatic creatures make up most of their diet. Being voracious predators, they enjoy different types of water species.

Sea lions eat fish, sea otters, seals, sharks, otters, anchovies, turtles, and sea turtles. Sea lions are known to surprisingly attack the sea otters which swim in the sea. Besides, sea lions can consume small species of sharks and seals. There are several other fishes that sea lions prefer generously!

Sea lions eat clams, eels, sea urchins, krill, kelp, shrimp, lobsters, mussels, octopus, starfish, and tuna. Plus, sea lions eat penguins, fur seals, birds, and the meat of other animals.

Sea lions will eat dogs, ducks, geese, herring, seagulls, and crabs. So before you go out for a walk with your pets, be sure to have them on the leash! That way, your precious pets and you won’t be in trouble if encountered by sea lions.

Sea lions are marine mammals that are built to feed only on a fish diet. And it’s quite obvious because of their predatory and ferocious dietary habits.

No matter the type of species, sea lions would consume as much fish as they can in a day. In fact, sea lions eat more than 15 lbs. of food in a single day! Coming to our point, sea lions don’t eat fruit, vegetables, or plants.

Hence, you shouldn’t try feeding them apples or other veggies even if they are cut-up!

How do sea lions eat

Before gulping down the fish, sea lions toss it around until it manages to get in their mouths. Once they have seized it in their mouths, sea lions would either swallow it whole or squash it with their teeth. There’s no surprise why they have at least 38 teeth, helping them tear the prey in parts.

As we said earlier in the post, sea lions don’t eat humans. However, they can attack them if humans are in proximity. Apart from this, sea lions don’t eat abalone, algae, bread, polar bears, jellyfish, dolphins, fruit, grass, harbor seals. In short, sea lions don’t eat marine iguanas, oysters, plants, pelicans, phytoplankton, and seaweed. Finally, sea lions don’t eat their young or whales!
