Where do sea turtles sleep?

July 2023 · 2 minute read

Turtles are reptiles that sleep at the surface while in deep water or on the bottom wedged under rocks in nearshore waters. Many divers have seen green turtles sleeping under ledges in reefs and rocks. They are found in oceans all over the world, and there are seven different species of sea turtles. Like all reptiles, sea turtles have scaly skin and moist outer shells, or carapaces. Each species has its own pattern on its shell: in the water, a turtle often looks like a floating log. Out of the water, its bony plates look quite formidable.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Around

There are more than 150 species of sea turtles. All are protected with strict laws in all countries worldwide. Sea turtles are unique in many ways, including their life cycle, which spans from 50-120 years, and thousands of miles of ocean migration. They don’t have noticeable ears or a tail and they can weigh up to 800 pounds, or 403 kilograms.

Sea turtles travel thousands of miles over the course of their lifetime – to mate, to breed, and to find food. Beachfront development is the greatest risk sea turtles face today. Artificial light disorients hatchlings while they crawl toward the water’s edge; much of their nesting habitat has been taken over by humans to build hotels or homes, and fishing nets kill many adults as they migrate to feeding grounds.

Can turtle see in the dark?

The answer to this question is yes. Unlike most animals, the turtle does not have a problem seeing in the dark completely. But the way it does this is fascinating in itself and quite unique. The turtle can see in the dark because of its eyes that contain a special cleansing membrane that cleans dust particles as soon as they enter the eye.
