Where do wild pigs sleep?

September 2022 · 2 minute read

Pigs seek out thick underbrush or root into a brush pile or downed tree top to sleep for security. Some are awake as early as 4:00 a.m., and stay active until 10:00 p.m. They need a comfortable place that protects them from cold, wind, rain, and snow. Both domestic pigs and wild pigs like to stay underground when possible. Wild pigs are a little more creative with their shelter building than domestic pigs. Wild pigs will build burrows or digs in a hillside, or scoop out an area of dirt under a tree to make their home. A hollow log can also be used for shelter or the hollowed-out trunk of a fallen tree. These animals have been called “Timber Hog” because they will cut up a tree trunk around the inside and live in it. If none of these options are available, they will just dig a shallow hole and curl up in it during inclement weather.

Most wild pigs are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and hunt at night. They like to roam in areas that have plenty of bushes, tress, and leafy friends, so they can easily blend into their habitat. Pigs are excellent diggers, which makes it easy for them to make dens beneath tree roots or thick brush on the ground. Wild hogs usually stay in one place during the day, soaking up the heat from the sun, and then begin their nightly search for food once it gets dark.

Whenever our wild pigs get tired after spending the day in their wallowed-out mud holes, they lay down wherever they happen to be. As it turns out, they don’t spend much time sleeping outside of those wallowed-out areas.
Wild pigs are native to the North American continents, ranging across the majority of Canada, parts of the United States, and into northern Mexico. Pigs’ physical features often vary and can include both long and short hair with a variety of colorations. Their size does not heavily vary, on average weighing from 15-200 pounds (6-91 kilograms). Many people know that pigs sleep in the mud and sludge of ponds and lakes, but did you know where they also rest?
