How To Repel Grass Carrying Wasps

April 2023 · 3 minute read

Although Wasps are generally beneficial predator insects in the garden and can sometimes be attracted to places that are too close to humans. Changes in the climate have led to insects like wasps multiplying quickly, making it more difficult to eradicate them. Adult wasps don’t die if there aren’t many (or none) winter freezes. The breeding season is extended by year-round warmth. These stinging insects and grass carrying wasps are now a major problem.

Some reasons why the grass carrying wasps may be found in lawn grasses are;

They feed on larvae and insects in lawn soil. For example, grass carrying wasps fly low over lawns looking for larvae and grubs in the morning. They are beneficial insects that can generally be left alone.

They seek sugar through the consumption of sugary fruits, soiled food, and honeydew. Some lawns become coated with natural sugars when berries and fruits ripen.

Ways to reduce grass carrying wasps

These are some of the ways you can reduce grass carrying wasps in your garden and lawn;

1. Do not leave food, including pet food, open or spilled outside.

2. Keep trash cans covered.

3. Recycle and compost fallen fruits and berries.

4. Before putting recyclables outside, rinse them out.

5. Maintain a healthy lawn and keep it mowed high. Thick, dense lawns are more resistant to ground-holding wasps as well as other insect and grub infestations.

Solutions to Wasp Problem Pest Control

You can use powdered repellents or natural wasps killer pesticides to kill or drive grass carying wasps from your lawns and nests in walls or other difficult-to-reach places.

Dry powders like Diatomaceous Earth and talc can be used to treat social wasp nests in holes. Simply distribute the powder around the hole opening.

1. Powdered Cinnamon

Powdered cinnamon repels grass carrying wasps. As with bay, cinnamon also contains eugenol essential oils, which wasps don’t like. Sprinkle cinnamon on areas where wasps have been spotted to repel them. To keep wasps away, you will need to renew your cinnamon repellent every week.

2. Diatomaceous Earth

DE kills insects and grass carrying wasps by removing the wax layer from their bodies and infiltrating their joints. This can lead to injury or desiccation. This diatomaceous earth is not instantaneous. It will reduce the number of targeted wasps by a significant amount if it is left for a few days.

3. Baby Powder

Baby powder is believed to repel wasps. You can sprinkle it on their nests and they will be forced to leave. This substance must be applied daily until all wasps have been eliminated.

If the powder is diatomaceous earth, wasps will die when they come in contact with the powder. They will then carry it into their holes or nests where other wasps may encounter it. The powder repels them from the hole in the case of cinnamon and talc.

To reduce or eliminate the population, you’ll need powdered solutions to be applied daily for at least a week. This should be carried out at night, while the wasps are sleeping. Although most wasps won’t attack you if they don’t perceive you as being bothersome, be aware that they may interpret your presence around their entrance as annoying.

Powdered deterrents can be placed outside of the entrances to hidden wasp nests. This is a passive and smart way to slowly get rid of them. If these methods don’t work within a month, you should call a professional to help with difficult-to-access wasp nests.
