Surprisingly, goldfish larvae cannot be recognized as ‘golden’ fish at all. After hatching, it doesn’t need to be fed or eat anything for a few days because it feeds on the yolk sac attached to their bodies. After the larva stage, they become goldfish fry. Goldfish fry eats small marine insects, crustaceans, their larvae, planktons, and small aquatic vegetation.

What Baby Goldfish Look Like?

Baby goldfish is only 4.5 mm long by the time they have recently hatched from their eggs and have a different appearance than adult goldfish. Newly hatched goldfish larvae are a silver-grey or metallic black shade that gradually becomes brown and lightens as they grow. Goldfish larvae look more like a tadpole than a fish. Its body is almost see-through. It has three body parts: a head with big eyes, a transparent body, and a translucent tail.

It has big, black, prominent eyes, but its mouth is under-developed when it hatches, so it cannot eat anything. It has no fin and a characteristic tail like fish. 

The goldfish larvae fry and start to develop fins. Their size increases up to 5mm. Goldfish fry has developed mouths and can now eat by this stage. It starts growing side fins, scales and develops patches of colorizations on its skin. The goldfish fry grows, and it adopts fish-like features. It can now swim, has started developing scales, fins are formed, and by this stage, the baby goldfish is called a juvenile.
