If a bucket of ice is left in a cool spot, it could take 24 hours for the ice to freeze completely. This assumes that the temperature hovers around freezing and no other type of heat source is nearby. If warmth is added, such as from insulation or sunlight, the ice will freeze more quickly.

If a bucket of ice is left outside, the melting process will generally be slower, but it could still take several days for the entire thing to freeze.

As soon as the ice is exposed directly to air temperatures near 0 degrees Celsius, it begins to melt. If an extremely cold temperature is available from another source such as a freezer or underground pipes, the ice will melt more quickly.

If a bucket of ice is left outside and covered with insulation such as straw or blankets, it will melt more slowly than if exposed to the air. It is possible for enough heat to be trapped in this way that the entire bucket eventually melts.

When an ice cube melts in warmer temperatures, it melts very quickly. This is because the ice cube is already at 0 degrees Celsius, and will not melt until it reaches air temperature. In colder temperatures, however, heat from the outside environment must first be transferred to the cube before melting can begin, which takes more time.

In the wintertime when temperatures are below freezing for extended periods of time, it can take days for ice to completely melt.

Additionally, how long it takes to freeze ice will depend on what is surrounding the ice cube. If there is no solid surface beneath the cube, such as on a lake or in space, it may float and never fully form. It has also been observed that when an ice cube melts in a glass of water, it can cause the temperature of the glass to drop.
