Animals

Adults eat tiny creatures like frogs and enter the water to grab tadpoles, birds, ants, newts, and even small fish. Grass snakes eat Lizards, rats, roaches, bugs, moles, ants, pond snails, bird eggs, chicken eggs, goldfish, cats, duckling’s, slowworms, slugs, rabbits, ticks, newts, spiders, chipmunks, fish, mice, voles, and even shrews. All of these can be found in their diet. Though they are opportunists, mice are the best diet for them. Grass snakes love to eat mice. Young Grass Snakes love to eat slugs, earthworms, voles, and tadpoles. They are, however, excellent climbers and may even take young birds.

Although frogs, toads, and newts are the preferred food of grass snakes, they will also eat fish, small animals such as cats, rabbits, chipmunks, and birds such as chickens and ducks. Grass snakes rely on surprise to prey because they lack venom. Grass snakes are also known to eat other snakes and their eggs. A snake will strike out and consume its unwary prey completely. When the prey is ingested, it is frequently still alive.
