Adults eat tiny creatures like frogs and enter the water to grab tadpoles, birds, ants, newts, and even small fish. Although frogs, toads, and newts are the preferred food of grass snakes, they will also eat fish, small animals such as cats, rabbits, chipmunks, and birds such as chickens and ducks. Grass snakes rely on surprise to prey because they lack venom. Grass snakes are also known to eat other snakes and their eggs. A snake will strike out and consume its unwary prey completely. When the prey is ingested, it is frequently still alive.
What Grass Snakes Don’t Eat
Grass snakes are carnivorous predators and can not eat herbivore diets like grasses and fruits. They also do not eat insects or other invertebrates. Grass snakes don’t eat bugs, hedgehogs, grasshoppers, guinea pigs, lizards, spiders, ticks, snails, and ants. They are also not considered a severe threat to humans due to their small size and non-venomous nature.
