Groundhogs are rabbit species. They are also known as woodchucks. They belong to the rodent family. Baby groundhogs are called a kit, cub, or pup. They are raised by their mothers. They are less than 4 inches when born. They give birth to 1 to 9 infants out of which 4 to 5 are common little sizes. Young females give birth to smaller litter pups. The total weight of a baby groundhog is around 1 ounce. A 10 cm adult groundhog weighs around 25 to 30 g. They are born blind and naked. You should never keep a groundhog in your garden. It will destroy all the grass and plants because that’s the very thing it forages on. They get all their nutrients from herbaceous matter. During summers, they like to roll in open sunny areas outside their dens. They are very shy so you better touch them very carefully. The average lifespan of a groundhog in the wild is around 6 years but in captivity, they can live up to 12 years.

They have an herbivore diet. Their diet consists of herbaceous matter and some tiny grubs.

Seeing that Baby Groundhogs are herbivores, Baby Groundhogs eat plants, grasses like hay, alfalfa, crops and fields, clover, peas, dandelions, red mulberry and hackberry leaves, broccoli, beans, lettuce, soya beans, bushes, ferns, grass, flowers, barks, and twigs of many trees and plantain, etc. 

Insects and other little creatures

Baby Groundhogs sometimes eat bugs, grasshoppers, mites, ticks, and other herb-eating insects along with garden snails and garden bugs.

As they have a herbivore diet, Baby Groundhogs can’t eat meat. Baby Groundhogs don’t eat fish and other animals or any kind of flesh. Baby Groundhogs don’t eat dairy food products.
