Pelican sleep on land either by resting on their breast and stomach or while standing on both their feet. They tilt their beaks towards the side and rest their heads sideways on their shoulder. Pelicans can be found in coastal waters the world over, in both fresh and saltwater. In general, pelicans are comfortable going where other birds dare not go. They enjoy the water and inhabit a vast range of habitats that include oceans, seas, estuaries, lakes, rivers, and bays. They even spend time on sandy shores and mudflats or have been known to swim out to sea miles from land. Although they are capable of taking off with a few flaps of their broad wings, they do not do so if they are confronted by substantial winds or currents.

Pelicans are long-necked, web-footed birds that inhabit coastal areas around the world. They eat fish and crustaceans, with a special attraction to smaller fish and mollusks. Pelicans do not have external nostrils. Instead, they smell with the fleshy tube above their beak. Pelicans use gravity when preening their feathers and oiling their skin. This allows for a more active lifestyle in water. Pelicans nest in colonies of up to 40 pairs on islands or secluded parts of the mainland. They are very vocal during the breeding season, sounding like hounds baying at dusk.

One of the pelican’s favorite places to sleep is on one of these floating platforms in the Galapagos Islands. These flat areas made out of logs are known as rafts. While it isn’t an ideal place for sleeping, it does serve its purpose for resting at times. Pelicans will often times even rest in the water, with their back half up on the platform, and their front half still submerged in water. Fortunately, some have others have managed to come up with a sleeping solution that seems to please all pelicans.
