To open the hood of the BMW X5 you have to pull up on the hood release mechanism, located under the bottom left-hand corner of the steering wheel. This releases the hood latch which is located in front of the radiator grille.
The first step is to open your car door and locate this underneath your steering wheel. This will have a push button that you have to depress in order to pop the hood up.

After depressing the button and pulling down on the lever, you should be able to lift up on the hood and release it. You should also see the fuse box, air filter, oil plug, windshield wiper fluid reservoir tank, and air conditioning lines.
Be careful not to bend any of these lines when lifting the hood as they are very soft and will break fairly easily.
Why do you need to open the hood of your car?
The most common reason to open the hood of a car is to check the engine. By looking at the engine, you can tell if there is a problem with it and whether or not it needs to be serviced.
You can also check the fluid levels in the car (oil, windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid) and the air filter to see if it needs to be replaced.
If you are having car trouble and are not sure what the problem is, you can also take your car to a mechanic and have them look at it. Often times, the problem will be easier to diagnose when the hood is open.
