 Spun bearings make a noise that is usually described as a grinding or grating sound. It can be heard when you turn the wheel by hand or even when you are driving at slow speeds. If you listen to an old-fashioned record player, you can hear what it sounds like. This is because the rotating part of the bearing (the inner race) is not perfectly round but has some rough areas with tiny grooves or pits in the metal. These grooves catch against each other as they spin around and cause friction, causing heat and wear on the parts involved. The reason for this is usually due to improper lubrication of the bearings. If there isn’t enough lubrication between the surfaces, they will begin to wear against each other and make noise as they spin along with your engine or transmission. If you have an audible grinding sound when turning the wheel, then it is likely that your wheel bearing has failed.

Another cause of spun bearings “funny sound” can be over-tightening them when installing them into your vehicle’s engine or the transmission case. If you tighten them too much, they can start rubbing against each other inside and cause excessive wear on these surfaces.
