Eating Habits of Swans
The Swan is a member of the Anatidae family’s Anserinae subfamily of waterfowl. The majority of swans belong to the Cygnus family. Swans are long-necked, heavy-bodied, big-footed birds with long necks that glide gracefully when swimming and fly with slow wingbeats and outstretched necks. When migrating in diagonal or V-formation at great heights, no other waterfowl move as rapidly on the water or in the air as they do when migrating in diagonal or V-formation. The Mute Swan, trumpeter swan, and whooper swan are among the world’s largest birds, reaching lengths of more than 1.5 meters (59 inches) and weighing more than 15 kilograms (33 lb). They have wingspans of up to 3.1 meters (10 ft.). They are much larger than closely related geese, with proportionally larger feet and tails. Adults have a patch of unfeathered skin between their eyes and bill. Males and females have identical plumage, but males are typically larger and heavier than females. The world’s largest swan species was Cygnus Falconeri, a flightless giant swan known from fossils found on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Sicily.
