Most fumigants have no residual toxicity. They are released into the atmosphere in gaseous form and rapidly disperse because of their high vapor pressure. They are gone in seconds to minutes.

Some fumigants are persistent, though, and their residual toxicity can last for months or years if the treated area is not properly ventilated. An example of this type of fumigant is Vikane (sulfuryl fluoride) which has a very low vapor pressure and, thus, does not evaporate.

It is also extremely toxic.

Vikane dissipates naturally after an application if the treated area has been adequately ventilated during treatment, but it can remain for months or years in confined areas that have not been properly vented, making these areas unsuitable until Vikane levels are acceptable.

For this reason, it is critical that you properly ventilate the area after the fumigation to remove all of the gasses that were used in the process.

If you don’t, there is a chance that you will leave some residual Vikane in your building, which if it remains for too long could pose health risks to your employees or anyone else who happens to enter.

It can take three days or so for Vikane levels to drop below 1 ppm (parts per million) but this depends on factors such as temperature, humidity, and whether or not fans are being used. It’s also important to note that it doesn’t take just one application of vikane gas at 2 ppm for it to remain present for 3 days- if an area was inadequately ventilated during an application, it may still have high levels of vikane gas even after being re-entered.
