Freshwater eels can be found in North America called American eels. They are also found along the Atlantic coastline from Venezuela to Iceland and Greenland. These eels are found only in freshwater oceans, lakes, or rivers.

The average size of the freshwater eel is about 50cm, but they can grow up to 150cm in length. The average weight of freshwater eel is about 3kg to 5kg. The freshwater eel can live for about 5 to 20 years.

Insects and aquatic animals

Freshwater eels prey on a variety of insects and animals. Small eels prey on insects such as worms like mealworms and wax worms and snails present in the water. Large freshwater eels mostly prey on animals such as frogs and fishes. Freshwater eels can eat shrimps, slugs, frogs, mussels, lizards, meat, and crustaceans present in water. Freshwater eels also eat small fishes, young crabs, and small mammals, and amphibians. 

Freshwater eels mostly hunt for their food at night. Freshwater eels eat frogs, fish eggs, and small fish at night. During the daytime, they hide behind aquatic plants and grass. 

In captivity, freshwater eels mostly feed on bloodworms, brine shrimps, small crustaceans, white fish, and some other invertebrates. Freshwater eel generally eats their food every day but some eels feed after one to two weeks. 

What freshwater eels don’t eat? 

Freshwater eels don’t eat any aquatic plants or vegetables. They don’t eat large aquatic birds and mammals. Freshwater eels don’t feed on large fishes and humans.
