What do capybaras eat?
Capybaras are the largest rodents on the planet. Capybaras’ teeth grow continually, and they wear them down by grazing on aquatic plants, grasses, and other abundant vegetation, just like the teeth of other rodents.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundIn order to obtain all of the nutrients it needs, the Capybara must eat solely plant matter, which it does in order to survive. The Capybara’s food consists primarily of grasses and aquatic plants, with some fruits and berries thrown in for good measure, as well as the occasional nibble on soft tree bark.
They also consume their own poop first thing in the morning. The high number of bacteria digesting the previous day’s food results in a high concentration of protein in their poop at that time. Given how difficult it is for them to digest the grasses they consume, ingesting their poop effectively allows them to digest it twice.
Capybaras, in contrast to rats, are selective about what they consume, which is primarily grass. The capybara subsists on reeds, cereal grains, melons, and squashes during the dry season, when fresh grasses and water plants have dried up.
Animals and Insects
Capybaras are herbivores which means they only eat grasses and aquatic plants, with some fruits and berries thrown in for good measure, as well as the occasional nibble on soft tree bark. They don’t eat grasshoppers, fish, ants and other animals and insects.
Fruits and Vegetables
A moderate apple diet is beneficial to a capybara kept as a pet. Fruits such as bananas are a fantastic source of both energy and water. Furthermore, because of their moderate protein and dietary fiber content, they are an excellent fruit choice for capybaras kept as pets. Capybaras eat bananas, bamboo, hay, fungi, ferns, nuts, moss, water lilies, orchids, oranges, melons, aquatic plants, melons and some vegetables.
What capybaras don’t eat?
Capybaras are herbivores. In fact, capybaras mostly eat plants, grass, barks, sugar cane and tubers and some fruits as well. They don’t eat meat and other food.
