Can you eat the outside of edamame?

February 2023 · 2 minute read

The edible parts of edamame are the soybeans, which make up about 50% of the pods. The other half is made up of the green pod (or hull) and tendrils. Consuming this edible part can be quite addictive! So can you eat outside of edamame?

What is edamame?

Edamame (pronounced “eh-dahm-may”) are edible soybeans harvested at the peak of their maturity right after they become green beans. You pick them fresh from the pod, pop them out of their shells, and steam or boil them to eat as a healthy snack or appetizer.

Edamame is young soybeans harvested at the peak of their maturity.

The word edamame means “Bean on Branches”. Farmers harvest them by snapping off the branches and carefully removing red kidney-shaped soybeans encased in green, somewhat leathery pods. There is no need to peel or devein these beans as they are already very soft and sweet.

To serve edamame, light steaming is often all they need to make them even more tender and bring out their flavor. Plain soybeans can be served hot or cold, garnished with coarse salt. They can also be sprinkled with any of the following: black sesame seeds, fried garlic, grated fresh ginger, nori flakes, or a sprinkle of shichimi togarashi (a multi-flavored Japanese chili pepper).

In fact, it is recommended to snack on the pods as a whole. However, after removing them from the plastic bag, put them in a bowl filled with cold water and let them sit for a few minutes. This will help freshen them up and remove any excess salt or sugar used for preservation.

Are there any medical issues associated?

Yes, there are medical issues associated with edamame

You should not consume too many soy products unless you suffer from major health problems, such as breast cancer. Soybeans contain estrogen and may cause related health problems, such as infertility.

The pods are delicious, healthy & versatile. They’re also one of my favorite appetizers! I’ve tried them at several Asian restaurants and really enjoy them. The outside is edible too, however you remove it from the bag – fresh will be much better than salty or sugared!
