The transponder communicates with the controller via radio frequency signals. When the transponder receives a signal from the controller, it responds by transmitting back a unique identification code to the controller. This code is used to verify that the owner of the vehicle is authorized to start the engine. If the code does not match the one stored on the transponder, then the engine cannot be turned over.

The immobilizer may also have a tamper-proof feature that disables the ignition system if someone tries to remove the transponder from the steering column.
