How To Change Battery In BMW Key Fob

SMART KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT

If you want to replace the battery in your BMW Smart Key, you will need to get a CR2450 battery.

  • Remove the metal key blade that is on the key fob
  • Take the back cover off
  • Take out the old BMW key battery
  • Insert the new battery

    • COMFORT ACCESS BMW KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT

    This particular key is used in many different BMW models such as 1, 3, 5, 7, X3, X5, X6 Series. To replace the battery in your Comfort Access BMW Key, you will need to have a CR2032 battery. If your key isn’t opening, you might need the non-comfort access version which is supposed to have a built-in rechargeable battery.

  • Press the small tab that can be found on the key fob and pull to get the valet key out
  • Once the valet key is successfully removed, you should see a small access port that is on the key fob. You can use the valet key or even a flat screwdriver to take out the key battery cover.
  • Once you’ve removed it, you will be able to see the battery. Take out the dead battery and replace it with the new battery that you have.

    • NON-COMFORT ACCESS KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT

    If you happen to have a BMW key that has a side indent, this would mean that you have a battery that is rechargeable. Therefore, you won’t be able to open the battery case. This particular battery charges when it has been inserted in the ignition.

    If the battery is completely dead which is common for a 10-year old car, you can open the case, however, it will result in you cutting the plastic part of your key fob. If you want, you can visit a BMW dealership and have them do it for you.

    SLEEK SLANT SHAPED KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT

    The sleek slanted BMW key is used in numerous 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 F-Series Models such as the 3, 5, 7 series and the X3. To change the battery in your slant-shaped BMW, you will need to have a CR2032 battery.

  • Push the button to take out the valet key
  • In the opening, you should see a small groove. Use the valet key that you have to turn the groove clockwise
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the battery cover
  • Change the dead battery

    • DIAMOND KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT

    The battery that is in the Diamond key is not designed to be replaced, buy, it is certainly possible to change the battery in this key by simply cutting the case and soldering a completely new battery. To change this BMW key battery, you’re going to need a VL2020 battery. However, it’s not recommended by the manufacturer that you do this.
