Apply Saniderm
- Dry the tattoo well. Saniderm should be cut to the desired length. To avoid contact with dry, un-tattooed skin, you should allow for at least an inch extra on each side.
- Peel off the opaque backing to expose a small area of the sticky side.
- As you peel the backing, smoothen Saniderm all over the tattoo.
- Remove the clear/shiny support backing (on the exterior) once you have applied it. Brands may vary in the appearance of the backing, both on the front and back.
- For best results, the bandage should be applied flat to the skin without wrinkles or bubbles. If the bandage is not properly applied, it can leak.
How Does Saniderm Work?
Saniderm, unlike Saran Wrap, is a medical-grade, waterproof, breathable tattoo bandage. Saniderm has been engineered to resist gases like oxygen. These bandages eliminate many of the problems associated with traditional tattoo healing techniques. Primarily, Saniderm dramatically reduces the chance of contaminants entering a new tattoo site. Saniderm helps to protect the skin from shear/friction and keeps the body moisturized.
The bandage should be kept on for at least 3-6 days, or as directed by your artist. The full six-day period is ideal. It’s fine to take off the bandage sooner than you think if the skin is irritated or there is fluid buildup.
Saniderm Removal
- You can remove Saniderm by grabbing a corner of the bandage, and then pulling it over your head in the direction of hair growth. Saniderm can be removed in the shower. Running water can help to loosen the adhesive and relax your skin, making it easier. Saniderm can cause skin irritation and additional trauma if it is not removed by water.
- You can throw away the bandage, and you can wash the tattoo with mild soap.
- Let the tattoo air dry, or use a towel to dry it.
- If fluid builds up in the first few days, you can repeat the process using a different piece of Saniderm. There may be some blood, ink, and/or plasma buildup underneath the Saniderm within the first 24 hours. This is normal. This is normal. Saniderm should be removed when there is buildup. Clean and dry the area before applying again.
- If you develop an adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately.
- Apply a thin layer on your tattoo after you have removed the Saniderm. To help your tattoo stay hydrated and itchy less, apply a thin layer with a petroleum-free moisturizer.
After the tattoo healing phase has ended, do not apply any more bandages. You should make sure that the area is well moisturized if you are unable to apply bandages during this phase.
Coconut oil as well as baby oil can be used to remove any adhesive residue that remains on the skin.
After removing your Saniderm, how to care for your new tattoo
After the bandage is removed, you can continue to care for the tattoo by moisturizing and washing it as necessary until it heals completely. Your Saniderm wrap may make the tattoo appear fully healed. The deeper layers of the skin will certainly continue to heal for another 2 to 3 months. For this period, we recommend using a moisturizing cream.
Saniderm while showering, swimming, or exercising
Saniderm can be used to shower, but it is best to limit the time in the tub. It is not recommended to bathe, swim, or completely submerge a tattoo-covered in Saniderm. While Saniderm can be worn for light exercise, it is best to avoid excessive sweating. The adhesion to the bandage will be affected by water, sweat, and other fluids. Keep the bandage clean and dry until you are ready to take it off.
