How tight your skate wheels depend on a couple of things. Your skating style, your weight, your height… They all play a role in the perfect tension. Here are some tips to make getting it right easy as pie.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundFor starters, you want them tight enough so the wheels don’t move when you stand on your skates with most of your weight. You can do this by hand or ask a friend for help. If they spin slightly, they’re probably about right. As a general rule roller skate wheels should be rolled in towards the frame without resistance – but not too much! If you find that they are tight enough to roll inwards with some force then this is too much tension and makes it harder to turn corners.
You also want to make sure there are no gaps between the axle and bearings, but at the same time they shouldn’t be rolling freely on the axles either or you can damage your bearings, which ain’t cool!
You also need to make sure the wheel isn’t loose on the axle otherwise it will move around and you lose all control. It’s about that perfect tension where you can roll the wheel along with very little force but certainly no resistance.
A great way to test if your wheels are too tight is by doing a very slow speed slide to see if they lock up or not. If so, then there’s definitely too much tension. Loosen one side slightly at a time until you find that sweet spot!
So in conclusion, how tight should roller skate wheels be? Tight enough so they don’t move when stood on without spinning, have no gap between axles and bearings, are not against the frame, nor are they loose on the axles, and won’t lock up when doing very slow speed slides.
