Styrofoam is actually mostly air, which is also why it is so light. It is water resistant but not waterproof; in many applications, it will absorb water over time.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundWhat happens to styrofoam when it becomes wet?
The issue with styrofoam water infiltration is that once it occurs, the styrofoam loses its insulating properties. Because polystyrene sheets absorb and store water, the expansion and contraction of water molecules as they freeze can compromise the integrity of the pellets and eventually cause the styrofoam piece to break off.
What do you use to seal Styrofoam?
You can use a general craft sealant, such as Mod Podge, or you can use something specifically for the styrofoam, such as Foam Finish. Using a foam brush or a regular paint brush, apply the sealant and allow it to dry completely before painting the styrofoam.
Is styrofoam waterproof?
How Can a Foam Board Be Waterproofed? Because foam board insulation does not absorb moisture, it effectively limits the amount of moisture that can accumulate in your insulation. The most waterproof materials are polyiso and extruded polystyrene foam boards.
What type of foam does not absorb water?
In general, closed cell foam is semi-impermeable, restricting airflow and being less absorbent of water, whereas open cell foam is semi-permeable, allowing air and water to pass through.
How long does styrofoam last?
Styrofoam actually takes 500 years to decompose, as per Washington University; it cannot be recycled, which means that the Styrofoam cups dumped in landfills will remain there in perpetuity.
Is Flex Seal compatible with styrofoam?
Flex Seal is not recommended for use on foam. Certain foams may react poorly with Flex Seal, warping or dissolving. Additionally, we do not recommend using it in environments with high temperatures or pressures (such as engine radiators or gas tanks). On vinyl, we do not recommend using Flex Seal spray.
