Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundGnat larvae hatch and start looking for food. They feed on leaf molds, compost, organic mulch, grass clipping, fungi, and root hairs. Baby gnats need a moist environment to grow. They stick to a plant and eat its part hence molding and drying it out. They also alter plant growth by spreading infectious diseases among them.
What Baby Gnats Look Like?
Gnats larvae are usually small worm-like with white almost translucent bodies with characteristic black shiny heads and legless maggots. Gnat larvae have segmented bodies and look like water drops while moving. They are around four to five millimeters at birth. The last part of its body is a round and flat lobe that keeps. They don’t have mouthparts, so they cannot bite humans or other animals. They lack proper legs and develop legs when they are in the pupa.
These are actual insects with three body parts. The main body parts of gnat larvae are; a distinctive blackhead, segmented and transparent body, and a lobe at the dorsal end. Baby gnats at their longest stage are 5.5 cm long. Then they build a pupa around them. This pupa is white initially, but when adults have to come out, it becomes darker.
Unlike other larvae, gnat larvae do not have legs or hair and are white pale translucent in the shade. They have potent mandibles, and they also eat dead gnat larvae and dead pupae. The early larval stage of gnats looks different from adults as they lack legs, antennas, wings, mouthparts, and slender body which they develop while they pupate.
