Does Deet Repel Bed Bugs?

February 2023 · 3 minute read

The common bed bug has grown into a major public health issue in metropolitan settings. Bed bugs are unwelcome for most people, and getting rid of them is a challenging task. There is a dire need for materials and methods that can reduce the number of bed bugs in your home, workplace, and at night. These goals can be achieved by a repellent product that discourages and prevents bed bugs from moving into protected areas.

DEET as a bug repellent

The commercial insect repellents that contained 0.5% permethrin and 7% picaridin had very little effectiveness against bed bugs. The most widely used insect repellent, N,N-diethyl-m-toluidine (DEET), was highly effective against bed bugs. The minimum DEET concentration needed to repel 94% of bed bugs over a 9-hour period when a host cue (carbon dioxide), was 10%. DEET’s repellency was dependent on its concentration. DEET-treated fabric surfaces with a 25% concentration remained highly repellent against bed bugs for 14 days. DEET is strong-smelling and can dissolve certain plastic materials. We evaluated several non-corrosive, odorless and effective repellents. Two natural products, isolongifolenone and isolongifolanone, were recently identified as insect repellents. However, their repellency against bed bugs was significantly lower than DEET. People repel bed bugs by using DEET spray. This is particularly beneficial at night, when they’re trying to get to sleep. In the context of pests repelling means that an insect will see it and try to avoid it DEET is the most widely used active component in insect repellents. DEET content determines how long the repellent lasts. The repellent’s effectiveness will be longer if it contains a higher percentage of DEET.

These products won’t do anything other than what they claim, repel. Many bed bugs will eat anyways if they are hungry, even though these products only repel the problem. As if you were bitten by a mosquito wearing your repellent. DEET won’t kill or eradicate any insect, even bed bugs. Although there isn’t any certainty, some indirect species may be blinded by DEET. Researchers believe that bed bugs prefer to avoid DEET-covered surfaces. DEET does not stop them from crossing the surface. Bedbugs will travel across untreated surfaces more often than they do treated ones.

Bed bugs attracted towards humans

The bedbugs can smell carbon dioxide in the human breath and follow it to its source. The bedbugs are amazing. If we could get them to do what we want, they would be a tremendous asset. They are a menace because they only want to drink our blood. They have the ability to reproduce in great numbers, conceal themselves in tight locations, and move around freely, making them tough to eradicate once they become founded.

When DEET is used

If you’re only in an area that is more vulnerable to bed bugs, DEET can be applied to your feet. You will have a lower chance of them coming home. You may also be allowed to spray it on a bag to keep bed bugs away if the label allows. The spray is only good for a few hours.
