Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundStep 1: Understand each part of your wheel
The first thing to do when attempting to tighten your roller skate wheels is to understand what each part of the wheel does and how it’s connected. The major parts of a regular inline or quad roller skate wheel include:
- Outermost edge (tread)
- Hub (the hole in the middle that goes over the axle)
- Bearing (the metal ball within the hub that allows it to spin freely)
The outermost edge touches against the ground while you’re skating, allowing you to grip onto it with your feet for added control. The bearings are located inside each hub along with washers, which keep them centered so they don’t fall out. Washers are designed to take the brunt of the force, so they won’t wear down as quickly as your bearings will if they’re not tightened enough.
Step 2: Tighten each wheel one by one
Now that you know what each part does, tighten each wheel at a time.
Step 3: Wiggle each wheel from side to side until a metal washer falls out
This will ensure that the bearings are properly tightened and centered. Refer to your specific roller skate manual for information on exactly how tight each bearing should be.
Step 4: Replace a washer if you have trouble tightening the wheels
If one of your bearings is still having problems staying in place, use a wrench to replace it with a new washer. The first time you tighten a wheel, whether it’s a replacement or not, replace both side-by-side washers to maximize safety for yourself while skating at higher speeds.
Step 5: Close up each bearing until they stop rotating (make sure there are no loose parts)
Make sure that any loose parts around your bearings are collected together before continuing on to step six.
